The present tense

For both strong and weak verbs the endings are:

-e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en.

These endings are added to the stem of the infinitive:

spielen - ich spiele (etc.)

trinken - ich trinke (etc)

Some strong verbs have special forms in the present tense (and must be learned)

(a) Stem vowel a or au

Most of these modify the vowel in the 2nd or 3rd persons singular, e.g. fallen, to fall, laufen, to run;

ich falle, du fällst, er fällt, wir fallen, ihr fallt, sie fallen

ich laufe, du läufst, er läuft, wir laufen, ihr lauft, sie laufen

(b) Stem vowel e (short) or e (long)

In most of these e (short) changes to i, e (long) changes to ie, e.g. sprechen, to speak, lesen to read:

ich spreche, du sprichst, er spricht, wir sprechen, ihr sprecht, sie sprechen

ich lese, du liest, er liest, wir lesen, ihr lest, sie lesen
